Evil Dead (2013)

   -   Horror
Mia, a young woman struggling with sobriety, heads to a remote cabin with her brother and three friends, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.
Director:
 Fede Alvarez
Stars:
Jane LevyShiloh FernandezJessica LucasLou Taylor Pucci

THE BUZZ: Yes, it's a touchy situation, to discuss this particular remake, which was being developed as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man legacy was rebooted. The announcement that Diablo Cody would co-author the screenplay yielded divided fans even further, even though Jennifer's Body will one day earn its due status as a cult classic. Loving the notion of an addled female protagonist, by the way, and star Jane Levy is great on "Suburgatory". Fede Alvarez earned the director's chair after his short Panic Attack! became a viral sensation.

Brian Helgeland - 42 (2013)

42 (2013)

Biography | Drama | Sport
The life story of Jackie Robinson and his history-making signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers under the guidance of team executive Branch Rickey.
Director:
 Brian Helgeland
Stars:
 Chadwick BosemanHarrison FordAlan TudykKelley Jakle

Brian Helgeland excels with serious drama, especially as a screenwriter (L.A. Confidential and Mystic River come to mind), so I am looking forward to what he does with this landmark sports story as its writer/director. Of course it's a huge undertaking for the relatively unknown Chadwick Boseman, and a major casting risk on the studio's part, but that makes us want to root even harder for everyone involved.

Steven Spielberg - Jurassic Park (1993)

    -   Adventure | Family | Sci-Fi
Metascore: 68/100 (20 reviews)
During a preview tour, a theme park suffers a major power breakdown that allows its cloned dinosaur exhibits to run amok.
Director:
 Steven Spielberg
Stars:
 Sam NeillLaura DernJeff GoldblumRichard Attenborough

THE BUZZ: Even if the long-planned fourth installment doesn't arrive for Summer 2014 (though Rise of the Planet of the Apes' writers are currently working on the project), Dr. Alan Grant, his crew, and those dinosaurs who now look so dated will get the 3D overhaul/cash-grab. It would be cool to take kids to see this for their first time.

Gerard Butler - Olympus Has Fallen (2013)

Olympus Has Fallen (2013)

Action | Thriller
A former Secret Service agent works to prevent a terrorist attack on the White House.
Director:
 Antoine Fuqua
Stars:
 Gerard ButlerAngela BassettRobert ForsterAshley Judd

THE BUZZ: This project came together quickly. It's as if Gerard Butler suddenly remembered that audiences like him most in action mode and Antoine Fuqua gave up yet again on that Pablo Escobar project and another script, Prisoners (which will now serve as director Denis Villeneuve's follow-up to the pretty brilliant Incendies). In a year where we will be treated to at least two projects with a similar theme, Olympus is no exception; months from now we can compare it to White House Down.

Sandra Bullock - The Heat (2013)

Action | Comedy | Crime
Uptight FBI special agent Sarah Ashburn is paired with testy Boston cop Shannon Mullins in order to take down a ruthless drug lord. The hitch: neither woman has ever had a partner -- or a friend for that matter.
Director:
 Paul Feig
Stars:
 Sandra BullockMelissa McCarthyKaitlin OlsonTaran Killam

THE BUZZ: Gracie Hart fans, listen up: Right before Sandra Bullock unveils her wildly anticipated science-fiction turn in Gravity, she teams up with Melissa McCarthy to keep the female-powered comedy renaissance going. The movies also serves as Paul Feig's follow-up toBridesmaids, as the director/producer/occasional writer is making industry strides on a Judd Apatow level.

As his lover announces her pregnancy, a fortysomething slacker receives other life-changing news: 142 people, all of them the result of artificial insemination, have filed a class action lawsuit against him, their biological father.
Director:
 Ken Scott
Stars:
 Patrick HuardJulie LeBretonAntoine BertrandDominic Philie

THE BUZZ: Hollywood has struck out over the last few years, having released several variations on the artificial-insemination comedy, so we were surprised to see that Canadian filmmaker Ken Scott has successfully mounted an A-list remake that will shoot later this year.

Jurnee Smollett - Tyler Perry's Temptation (2013)

Tyler Perry's Temptation (2013)

Certificate PG-13 Drama
A marriage counselor's personal and professional life becomes complicated after she enters into a relationship with one of her clients.
Director:
 Tyler Perry
Stars:
 Jurnee SmollettVanessa WilliamsBrandy NorwoodKim Kardashian

THE BUZZ: Tyler Perry hurried his newest Madea outing after Good Deeds underperformed, but he's busier than ever with two more somber-minded directing projects and an eyebrow-raising lead role as the new iteration of detective Alex Cross for director Rob Cohen (there goes the other eyebrow). Counselor is the project that had some people up in arms after Kim Kardashian was cast in a supporting role, while others remarked at how much star Jurnee Smollett had grown up since Eve's Bayou. Thematically, Perry isn't breaking any new ground, and I expect a his winning streak will remain unbroken this year (behind the camera, anyway).

Eva Mendes - The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)

Certificate R    -   Crime | Drama
A motorcycle stunt rider turns to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover and their newborn child, a decision that puts him on a collision course with an ambitious rookie cop navigating a department ruled by a corrupt detective.
Director:
 Derek Cianfrance
Stars:
 Ryan GoslingBradley CooperEva MendesRose Byrne

THE BUZZ: Hopefully Ryan Gosling's second project with writer/director Derek Cianfrance will reconfirm that Blue Valentine provided Gosling with his best role to date while Rose Byrne continues to build an admirable string of big- and small-screen successes and Bradley Cooper gets some much-needed tarnish on his near-perfect face. And, yes, we too think the premise recalls Drive a bit too much on paper.

Saoirse Ronan - The Host (2013)

The Host (2013) Poster

The Host (2013)

Sci-Fi | Thriller
A parasitic alien soul is injected into the body of Melanie Stryder. Instead of carrying out her race's mission of taking over the Earth, "Wanda" (as she comes to be called) forms a bond with her host and sets out to aid other free humans.
Director:
 Andrew Niccol
Stars:
 Saoirse RonanDiane KrugerWilliam HurtJake Abel

THE BUZZTwilight author Stephenie Meyer's other lit sensation does not have any sequels in place just yet, though Meyer said they have been outlined. Chances are everyone in her circle will wait to see how the movie performs; if it's a smash, perhaps The Seeker will be announced after opening weekend.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)

G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)

Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi | Thriller
The G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.
Director:
 Jon M. Chu
Stars:
 Channing TatumDwayne JohnsonRay ParkBruce Willis

THE BUZZ: The action figure franchise has really doubled-down with its follow-up to 2009'sRise of Cobra by adding bigger star power (The Rock, RZA and Bruce Willis as the original Joe!) and a midsummer release date that proves Hasbro has confidence this can pull a Fast and Furious-like improvement over its predecessor. Go Joe!

Admission (2013)

Admission (2013) Poster

Admission (2013)

Certificate PG-13 Comedy
A Princeton admissions officer who is up for a major promotion takes a professional risk after she meets a college-bound alternative school kid who just might be the son she gave up years ago in a secret adoption.
Director:
 Paul Weitz
Stars:
 Tina FeyPaul RuddNat WolffGloria Reuben

THE BUZZ: Tina Fey + Paul Rudd = considerable comedic promise. But (1) Fey had no hand in this screenplay; (2) Paul Weitz has lost his directorial touch since About a Boy; and (3) the first trailer is warm-hearted, but is it truly funny?

The Croods (2013)

The Croods (2013) Poster

The Croods (2013)

Animation | Adventure | Comedy | Family
The world's very first prehistoric family goes on a road trip to an uncharted and fantastical world.
Directors:
Kirk De Micco | Chris Sanders
Stars:
 Nicolas CageRyan ReynoldsEmma StoneCatherine Keener

THE BUZZ: Though DreamWorks Animation has remained mostly mute on this project, what has me primed is the presence of co-director Chris Sanders, who has co-captained How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch with Dean DeBlois. In development since at least 2005, the project was almost made with Aardman Animations, and John Cleese had an early hand in the screenplay.

Hummingbird (2013)

Hummingbird (2013)

Thriller
The story of an ex-Special Forces soldier who has found himself homeless on the streets.
Director:
 Steven Knight
Stars:
 Jason StathamVicky McClureSenem TemizLee Asquith-Coe

THE BUZZ: Gritty screenwriter Steven Knight (Eastern PromisesDirty Pretty Things) makes his directorial debut with a thriller that will hopefully help us distinguish Jason Statham's latest movie from everything that has preceded it.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013)

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013)

Comedy
Magician Burt Wonderstone splits from his longtime stage partner after a guerrilla street magician steals their thunder. By spending some time with his boyhood idol, Burt looks to remember what made him love magic in the first place.
Director:
 Don Scardino
Stars:
 Steve CarellJim CarreyOlivia WildeJames Gandolfini

THE BUZZ: Give partial credit to Horrible Bosses for this long-gestating comedy finally getting a green light; the two projects share the same writing team -- Jonathan M. Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who saw their rivaling magician screenplay pushed to the forefront after their workplace comedy scored with audiences. The on-screen pairing of Steve Carell and Jim Carrey should sell itself in a year that should steady Carell's career trajectory and stoke the embers that will reignite Carry's fire come Kick-Ass 2 time.

Stars:
Ingrid Bolsø BerdalIván GonzálezKyra ZagorskyLucy Clements

THE BUZZ: Such a take on the horror genre seems destined to become an at-home staple for the hardcore fans of the genre; as casual-interest viewers, we're just excited to see studios taking a chance with their theatrical releases.

Dead Man Down (2013)

Dead Man Down (2013)

Certificate R Action | Crime | Drama | Thriller
In New York City, a crime lord's right-hand man is seduced by one of his boss's victims, a woman seeking retribution.
Director:
 Niels Arden Oplev
Stars:
 Colin FarrellNoomi RapaceDominic CooperTerrence Howard

THE BUZZ: Find me a more intriguing director/star reunion than Dragon Tattoo's Niels Arden Oplev and Noomi Rapace and I'll acknowledge that the second and third installments of that trilogy were clunkers. Point to a stranger/more exciting cast than Rapace, Colin Farrell, Dominic Cooper, Terrence Howard, Isabelle Huppert, and Armand Assante (?!) and, okay, okay, I'll admit that this premise sounds like a series of potential cliches.

Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)

Action | Adventure | Fantasy
A Kansas con-artist is swept into a magical land where he must fight an evil sorceress.
Director:
 Sam Raimi
Stars:
 James FrancoMichelle WilliamsRachel WeiszMila Kunis

THE BUZZ: If you accept the notion that most of Sam Raimi's movies have been dark fairy tales, then perhaps James Franco will find more mainstream success as the star of a second, formerly objectionable prequel. Speaking of dark fairy tales, have you had enough of the trend or do you want more?

Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)

Jack the Giant Slayer (2013) Poster

Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)

Adventure | Drama | Fantasy | Romance
A modern day fairy tale in which the long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened, as a young farmer leads an expedition into the giants' kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess.
Director:
 Bryan Singer
Stars:
 Nicholas HoultStanley TucciEwan McGregorBill Nighy

THE BUZZ: Bryan Singer earned major cred for overseeing X-Men: First Class while keeping his commitment to Jack, his passion project. Nicolas Hoult held his own amongst First Class's starry cast, so I'm excited to see how he fares with his first leading Hollywood role. Of course, any first indication of what this fairy tale will look like is eagerly anticipated.
